The melting of the 20+ inches of accumulated snow has begun.

I could see a blue tinge to the early morning sky at 6:30 A.M., I knew sunshine was to follow.  It did.

Now the beautiful bright sun is gone.  It sure was pretty and uplifting while it lasted.

Now that the thaw has begun the icicles are growing like crazy.  We are going to have to knock some of them down.  Problem is, this old house has some dangerous areas.  When snow and ice melts, everything tends to run down the roof to the old concrete patio (where I took the photo), and down the sloped yard.  This old house, I lovingly refer to, has had several additions, several with different roof angles.  Every piece of ground goes downhill except for a small patch of driveway next to the house.  I think we need guardrails!

Melt, freeze, and melt again.  Repeat.

I had a handful of goat kids born during the snow storms.  Some are in the barn.  Some are in the house.  Two that were born during one of the coldest mornings, two out of a set of triplets, were near death.

My newborn kid revivial system will be posted in the next blog post.   It might help someone in the future with a very chilled newborn goat kid.

Other than loads of snow, ice, and newborn goat kids, there isn’t a lot of new news.  I have been busy.  Which is nothing new.  As I said once before, it will not be long before I will seek help.

I represent the simple life.   I also need to ensure I keep it as simple as possible, or I’ll be boggled to the point nothing functions correctly.  Then what good would that do for Annie’s Goat Hill?

How are you doing this winter? Thawing out? Ready for the spring garden?

Office Work

Paperwork, accounting, and various other office work is a big part of doing business.

My career in accounting and finance, for nearly 25 years, left me without a desire to sit at a desk and push papers and numbers.

Where I want to be is in the soap shop, in the barn, studying, reading a book, or enjoying quiet family or friend time.

The paperwork mounts.

It will not be long before I hire someone to help me do some of my hat wearing.

Until then, the plan is to begin scheduling in time to successfully move the papers from the in-basket, to the out-basket, and into the filing cabinet (or shredder).

Making myself accountable is another thing.  This is where having no boss (except myself) requires a lot of seat-belting myself to the office chair.

Do you have a particular task, like paperwork, that you particularly dread? A task you are good at, way too good at, yet, you procrastinate?

I am aware, procrastination gets people nowhere.  It amounts to more work to do, and clutter.

My plan, as of today, is to begin scheduling in paperwork time.  I will not read email during my paperwork hour.  I will not shop for supplies.  I will not plan the next bar of soap.  During my scheduled time I will be wiping out paperwork.

To make myself accountable, I will report in here.

I will be telling you if my plan is successful.

Have a beautiful paper-less day!

By the way, the picture isn’t too shabby is it? I decided to operate the camera today without reading the manual.  I love to learn and then go back and read.  I admit to it!

Do you have a favorite bathroom style?

I love the country cottage look.  Whitewashed walls, antique claw foot tub, painted wood floor. Billowy soft curtains.  A lot of antique white!

I am considering redecorating a small bathroom, however, I have stained wood Amish made cabinetry that I probably should not distress or white wash.  But, we only live once, right?

This is the type of thing I love:

I would probably go with a light sage green instead of robin’s egg blue, or perhaps caramel or a deep sand beige.

Simple, rustic, country cottage feel…and, of course, I have to add, I can see a large bowl of goat milk soap sitting somewhere in the room, along with a claw foot tub, great for the aromatherapy bath treatment!

By the way, this photo came from Valspar.com.  I had a load of fun picking out colors, and using the “digital painter.”

As a small business owner I find great joy in the various daily contacts that I make.

Many years ago I thought networking meant selling.  It does not mean that at all! To network, you are communicating via a common thread.

The stone wall no longer holds anyone in.  Networking can come from a blog post or comment, a tweet on Twitter, a post on Facebook, an email, or an actual conversation with a business owner, a banker, or it can be as simple as conversing with a person while standing in line at the post-office.

Owning an internet-based company in the country could be lonely.  But it is not.  I so much appreciate the contact.  The contacts come with an added benefit, learning.  Listen to your friends, your casual contacts, your customers.  Really listen.  We live in a fascinating world, a world full of brand-new knowledge, just waiting to be gained.

Who would ever think work could be so enjoyable?

My hope for everyone: work towards doing something you enjoy, and enjoy working it once you get there!

A person never knows what they are going to see when driving along the remote, back-woods roads in southern Ohio.

As we came upon these outbuildings located on the side of the road, my husband, Bob, broke out in giggles.

I quickly spotted the numerous “Bob’s” and arrows, and the word Shorty (which I am lovingly called by my dear husband from time to time).

It was cute, funny, and added an extra touch of enjoyment to the ride.

Happy new year!

My outlook today is not wrapped around kicking out 2009 by the seat of its pants. I am reflective of the year that is passing in a few hours.

2009 was a tough year for many folks. Countless people, friends and family members, filed for bankruptcy, lost their homes, and lost their jobs. Many that held onto their jobs are still hanging in the balance. They no longer feel the security of, “I will work hard and this job should always be here for me.”

2009 was also a year to learn and grow. It was a year to look at the outlying pressures and say, “Okay, enough of that. I can be strong, I can survive. I can move forward!” Living for this very moment became the focus. Seeing our savings, our retirement, and our personal possessions diminish was disturbing. But learning to focus on what we can change, instead of what we cannot change, became the key. Difficult times can teach us to be flexible. It can be a tremendous time for personal growth.  And it can become a time to celebrate the small things in life, which are truly the big things!

I am looking forward to 2010. Anticipating a new year includes gratefulness for life itself, a yearning to continue to grow and experience whatever life brings. A thank you to God for life. An absolute time for joy!

Happy New Year!

Hello!

I hope you had a great Christmas!

We had a very relaxing Christmas day! I think I gained a few pounds.  Well, I know I gained a few pounds.  Friends and family indulged us with candy, cookies, not to mention the pie that I already had prepared.  Dinner was a pan of lasagna that held its own for 3 days!

Christmas was a windy, wet and cold day.  It was good to be inside.  It was wonderfully quiet.  At the same time I missed my family (my son’s families, my grand-children, my deceased parents, and especially my sister and nieces).

Spike, our boxer, ended up off his kibble.  His toe swelled up.  He chewed his toenail off last night, yes, down to skin level.  Today he went to the vet.  He had not been weighed in many years.  I guessed him at 90 pounds.  He looked thin this morning, dehydrated, even his collar was hanging loose.  They sure drop weight quickly.  He weighed in at 89.8 pounds! Besides that astonishment (size-wise), the doctor put him on a pain med and antibiotics, and gave us well-wishes as we went out the door.  Perhaps now I can sleep a bit better.  How and why do we allow ourselves to love our animals as much as we do? It scares me, it truly does.

I had to replace my CPU, translating to no new camera.  I did a back up as my old machine slowed down.  It sounded like a barber’s electric razor.  As I sat at my desk Christmas Eve morning I was almost startled out of my seat by the racket of the dying machine.  The new CPU is working and the files are slowly being restored.  Life is good.

I would love to hear some of your Christmas stories and adventures!

And, I hope sunshine returned to you as well! It is a beautiful day after Christmas here!

God bless.

I had a very enjoyable day today.

My husband has had knee problems recently.  I join him on some of his job runs, in case he needs a driver for the return trip home.  I truly enjoy his company.

As I waited for my husband to emerge from the muddy construction site today, I played with my mobile phone.  I made a video of the chicken pen near our truck (after I shot the above photo).

When I went into my shop tonight to make soap I made several videos.  It really was fun, and I want to share one of them with you.  But I cannot figure what to save the videos to on the PC, what type of file, to ensure I can play them as a video (and eventually submit to the blog).

Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions, or perhaps a link to an educating site online?

Have a wonderful Friday!
