Patience is definitely a necessity when learning new skills in life.

Our learning abilities are affected by certain things such as fear, natural talents, and even bad habits.

In my own life, for example, I found soaping to be rather simple.  I did not learn to make soap the “chemistry” way, I learned it by trial and error.  I used no special tools or calculators to develop formulas.  Learning soap required patience, with no frustration involved.

I am self-taught in goats, by studying everything I could get my hands on.  I do believe any animal keeper encounters new and frustrating situations, raising animals is not an exact science.  Nature involves living things.

I am learning how to ride a motorcycle.  It is difficult for me.  I am learning in baby steps.  Each hour of learning varies.  One hour feels like I move forward, the next feels like a step backwards.  But when I sit back and think about what progress I am making I realize that even the failures are not exactly that.  Being able to recognize where I make mistakes, where I go wrong, is progress in itself.

Making natural perfume falls into the learning curve as well.  Loving fragrance does not mean that I can whip up a concoction that smells like something a person would enjoy wearing on their skin.  Patience is required with perfuming because the end result, a matured blend that fails or passes, isn’t ready for many weeks.  I purchased natural perfume samples from others, thinking I was way off-base with my own creations, something I hesitate doing – comparing my work to others.  I did not like the samples.  It nearly prompted me to quit.  I didn’t, I decided to give it more time.

I have my moments, we all do.  We can easily say, “I quit, I give up. I was not meant to do this!” But where would that get us? Would we stop chasing (and accomplishing) our dreams if we did not work at them? Myself, I could easily say, “I will make soap and focus on nothing else, because I know how to make it!” Who said, however, good things come without work, without disappointment from time to time?

Instead, in humble honesty, shouldn’t we admit to ourselves and others, our efforts will take time? More often than not, the end result takes more time to accomplish than what we first thought it would.  Can you think of many pursuits where time and patience were not worth the effort?

Work hard and become a leader; be lazy and never succeed. – Proverbs 12:24

I sat on the yard swing at daybreak this morning in the cool air.

As I sat down I felt the dampness of dew against my legs.  It was not a bother.

I held a warm coffee mug in my hands and closed my eyes.

I listened to the morning doves, the chirping birds, the frogs, and the goose enjoying his bath on the pond.

It was beautiful.

The words “Thank you” came from my lips.

It was nothing short of pure life, nature’s awesome goodness.

I visited a friend in the hospital today.  It was a good visit.  We had not seen each other in a long while.  The visit ended with the lingering reminder of how much I do love my friend, and how very quickly life passes.

My friend is going to be okay.  She will get well.  But what if it had gone in the opposite direction?

I have a lot of catching up to do.  And I am glad to be reminded.  Busyness tends to drag us away from what really matters, if we let it.

Have a beautiful day!

After traveling on a number of congested roads today I silently reminded myself that I do not miss big town or city life.

My father was in the Army. We traveled a lot. We always lived in a town somewhere, sometimes on a busy military base. Later in life when I finally reached my dream of moving out of town I was incredibly happy. I still am.

This isn’t an easy life. It can involve dirty work. And the work does not take vacations. I can even say I have bitten off more than I can chew from time to time.

It truly is a choice though.

Is there anything you want to change, or have already put behind you, that you can say “I do not miss” to? Do you agree, the world really can bud out, and blossom, when we allow it to?

I do not know when it started for me, but I confess.  I seem to be in a regular habit of hitting a new procedure with both feet moving, without first reading instructions.

The pro’s to not reading instructions are:  you make mistakes and learn from them, and when you do read the instructions they make a lot more sense than reading them cold (with no knowledge or practice).

The con’s to not reading instructions are:  you waste money, you make mistakes (sometimes more than once), you waste time, and you encounter frustration.

The lesser of the two evils are…what do you think?

And how many times do you jump ahead, bored with instructions, filled with so much anticipation that you cannot wait to start, just to find out via the end result that you needed to read up first?

Inquiring minds (just mine actually) want to know.

Aleecia and Her New Buckling Enjoying Sunshine

I am a person that has an upbeat demeanor.

I try to be happy.  I try to be positive.  I try so very hard to not let anything in life beat me up.

But, February 2010, really did do a number on me.  Parts of March slid into that range as well.  It was a struggle, but I maintained!

The sunshine is now glorious.

The warmth is healing.

Determination pays off.  There is nothing worse, in my opinion, than a dismal person that likes to share the wealth.  I avoid it at all costs.

Dismal is equal to a lack of sunshine.

We all owe it to each other, a sunny disposition that is.

Do you agree?

At times the little things in our lives seem huge.  If a person allows it to happen, they can feel very much overwhelmed.

I had a very off-key week that began with the death of my mother-in-law.  Several of my does had kids and did not want to take care of their newborns for a few days.  Annie gave birth to two live kids, and one very dead one.  She is much better, another 3 or 4 days and we’ll be out of the woods.  Her kids are fine, nursing on bottles.  We have had water problems, thank goodness for all of the rain.  I now have oodles of beautiful rain water for the goats.

Overall, I decided to focus on what is good.  Focus on what needed to be done.  Focus on what was directly in front of me.  It worked, it always does.

I did not focus on anything that was not positive.  My prayers included thanks for the troubles.  I knew I would learn and grow from them.  I did.

Life is good despite the hardships.  The more we can edure, the stronger person we become, and perhaps, in turn, we can help others.

Have a beautiful weekend!

About 2 weeks ago I posted (here) “My plan, as of today, is to begin scheduling in paperwork time.  I will not read email during my paperwork hour.  I will not shop for supplies.  I will not plan the next bar of soap.  During my scheduled time I will be wiping out paperwork.”

I promised to follow up with you.  And I have good news.  Despite the sleepless nights due to barn activity, and a couple of weeks with no time to complete anything but the sheer necessities, I have made progress.

For the tasks that seem daunting, like paperwork, scheduling in time to focus on only the one task, allowing nothing to interfere, does work!

Lesson learned:  (even when it is a task that is loathed) stay on top of it, make an appointment to get it completed, no procrastination, total focus.  It makes the job so much easier.

Like the beautiful sunny day we are experiencing in Ohio today (the first in almost a month), this new centering has allowed the sunshine back into parts of my daily schedule.

For those of you that said you were encouraged to give it a try, scheduling in time to complete a task/chore, has it been a positive experience for you too?

lemon thyme - herbs

I have been dreaming.

Dreaming of spring and an herb garden.

Herbs are so versatile.  They are nice in soap, infusions, and for cooking.  They even smell lovely in the home, hanging to dry, not to forget the beauty of the herb itself.

I normally plant herbs in containers.  My favorite herb planters are old wash tubs.

This year I will plant an herb garden in raised beds.  Plans are to begin a garden that I can walk through and enjoy.

What I truly can imagine is a stroll along a flagstone path, with herbs growing where the feet brush, with the aroma wafting up as I pass.

Yes, that would be the spot.

How about a quiet place to sit, read, medidate, pray, or just to relax in general?

Want to join me? How about right now?

Office Work

Paperwork, accounting, and various other office work is a big part of doing business.

My career in accounting and finance, for nearly 25 years, left me without a desire to sit at a desk and push papers and numbers.

Where I want to be is in the soap shop, in the barn, studying, reading a book, or enjoying quiet family or friend time.

The paperwork mounts.

It will not be long before I hire someone to help me do some of my hat wearing.

Until then, the plan is to begin scheduling in time to successfully move the papers from the in-basket, to the out-basket, and into the filing cabinet (or shredder).

Making myself accountable is another thing.  This is where having no boss (except myself) requires a lot of seat-belting myself to the office chair.

Do you have a particular task, like paperwork, that you particularly dread? A task you are good at, way too good at, yet, you procrastinate?

I am aware, procrastination gets people nowhere.  It amounts to more work to do, and clutter.

My plan, as of today, is to begin scheduling in paperwork time.  I will not read email during my paperwork hour.  I will not shop for supplies.  I will not plan the next bar of soap.  During my scheduled time I will be wiping out paperwork.

To make myself accountable, I will report in here.

I will be telling you if my plan is successful.

Have a beautiful paper-less day!

By the way, the picture isn’t too shabby is it? I decided to operate the camera today without reading the manual.  I love to learn and then go back and read.  I admit to it!
