Misc 005When it comes to postage charges from Annie’s Goat Hill Handcrafted Soaps I try to be as fair as possible.  I want the value of the product that you receive from me to maximize the dollars that you have spent.  Not only do I expect the product to be what I claim it to be, but I also want the shipping and packaging to be equitably priced.

My online shopping cart calculates shipping based on the dollar amount of the order (from calculations that I have determined based on weight/pricing).  Fine tuning of the system is not an option at this point.

With many customer orders, the dollar amount charged to the customer for shipping and handling closely matches the actual postage charged by the US Postal Service.  Occasionally, I fork out a bit of my own money to cover the shipping.  Generally, the difference rests on the customer.

I carefully consider all costs when I price a product, but I do not include the time that I spend packaging and shipping a product.  This falls into the shipping costs category.

Have your eyes glazed over yet? Are you still with me? Sounds and looks like dry reading to me.

So, here is my proposal.  To help your pocketbook and to ease my mind until I can afford a shopping cart that works miracle postal calculations, beginning with orders shipped today, I am going to refund any postage that amounts to a difference of $1.00 or more on any single given order.

Example:  The shopping cart charged $5.00, the actual postage is $3.99, I will automatically refund the $1.01 to the customer.

Keep in mind, I do include samples, and have even included an extra bar of soap from time to time because I do not believe in stiffing a customer when it comes to their pockets.  Let me throw out  a sad scenario, have you ever seen soap for sale for $2.00 a bar on some auction site/entity, but the seller charges an enormous shipping fee? They are making money, believe me, and if they are not, so sad for those of us trying to make good for our industry!

So, back to business at hand…bottom line, if the shipping for your order is $1.00 or greater, your credit card will be refunded the difference.

As I wrap this up, for those of you that do not ship packages out on a regular basis, you may not know, USPS priority mail shipping is often cheaper than parcel post.  I calculated shipping for a customer yesterday.  Her instructions were, “Ship the cheapest rate.  I do not care if it takes a week to deliver.”  When I calculated her postage I found that priority mail was .03 cheaper than parcel post (and it was not a flat rate box).  So, to ship her order with a received date in 2-3 days, was much cheaper than regular parcel post with a 5-7 day shipment date.

Also, the “zones” that USPS uses to calculate their postage are based on miles.  The USPS paperwork that I have is not sitting right in front of me so, I am going to draft up an example.  Before Ms. Smith was educated on the USPS postage rates, she thought zone 5 was the west coast, California.  Incorrect, zone 5 is a destination at least 900 miles away.  And shipping is considerably higher for zone 5, than it would be for zone 2 (200 miles away).

If you have any question, concerns, or anything else of added value, I would love to hear! This is a discussion blog in my opinion, not something that I write and hope you read. I love the interaction, it is a matter of me hearing what works best for everyone!

Charolette 9-2-07Thought I would throw in some dairy goat statistics this evening.

Do you know which state had the largest number of reported dairy goats (at last count)? My first guess would have been California.  I was wrong.  Many years ago it was Ohio.  The correct answer is Wisconsin, at 40,000 head of dairy goats.  California follows with 37,000 head.  Iowa and Texas followed.

Now, when you look at dairy goat operations, the numbers jumble just a bit.  Texas reined in 2007  with a reported 2,100 dairy goat operations.  Followed by California, Pennsylvania, Michigan, New York and Washington state.

With all of these dairy goat operations, with their capabilities of producing over 2,000 pounds of milk a year, the United States imports 50% of the dairy goat cheese consumed, most of it coming from France. Crazy man? I think so!

I love to make the goat cheese! But when I began researching someone I could co-op with in Ohio, or even from a surrounding state, I ran into a lot of opposition both money-wise and a lack of interest.  Ohio is not a good place to own a commercial dairy goat operation.  So, that is when I turned to goat milk soap.  I believe in turning my love of the goats into something sustainable.

I drink my own goat milk raw, 2 cups a day.  I am a healthy person, so far, so good.  I believe goat milk is one the healthiest foods on the face of this planet (good for cholesterol, diabetes, allergies, the immune system, and more).  I cannot sell my milk, nor can I give it away.  Red tape, and I wish to not get myself in trouble.

I hope my future finds me at 80 years old, in a granny dress, milking a dairy goat, sassy and fit! I need to get the fit part right, first! That is my project this week, fitting up!!!

I will soon write an article on goat milk soap, how I still need to educate the public on its benefits, and even that it does exist!

Tarts and Candles 002I cannot say this enough.  I have always loved fragrance, but I am not sure I have said how much I love color.

My home is filled with muted colors such as greens (my kitchen is a muted olive green), cranberry, and tan hues.  I have a starters collection of Fiesta dishes (some antique, some new straight out of the box).  Again, beautiful greens, dark reds, blues, and golds.

I took art classes through my high school career.  When the teacher asked for something creative, I sculpted a huge tooth.  A tooth? Well, I liked it.  I did a lot of  “wow man” posters too.  A lot of bright color involved.  I loved the mosaics, and one day, I just have to try my hand at stained glass!

As I grew older I wanted to paint with oils.  I tried oils and watercolors, no real talent erupted from that endeavor.

I have painted a small bit on country type of wood pieces, using the small bottles of craft paint.  Loved it.  Mixed colors, loved it.  In fact, I have a string of hearts and stars, painted in a rustic manner, hung across my kitchen curtains.

What am I getting at? I am mixing and matching candle dye now.  I am so excited, no matter how tired I am I find myself experimenting.  I experimented with colorants in the soaps, and I still use some, but I like it more in the candles.  The soaps can have other skin-loving creativity added, we will keep most of the color ideas for the hot wax!

The scents today are lilac, yuzu, lily of the valley, honeysuckle, and cherries &  berries (to match the sister soap).  And the colors are much more muted.  I like them, especially the periwinkle blue (which was going to be lilac, but love the outcome).

I need to pick up a few new fragrances.  Essential oils are not usually a good mix with candles.  I need to find good matches to some of my favorite essential oils.  Lavender will be a lovely candle!

Kathy, I thank you for your gift set idea.  I am rolling around with some thoughts very similar to what you suggested.  Kathy has recently made some beautiful bottles of infused lavender oil, you need to visit her blog today, Spot On Cedar Pond, to see how beautiful they are!

Back to thinking about candles and packaging…

Have a wonderful Tuesday afternoon!

Tarts and Candles 002

It is Monday, the day of the week I have assigned to writing about a specific product.

Today I am showcasing a few products that have not yet hit the website, wax tarts and candles.

I began working on these products last Thursday.  At first the colors jumped out at me, like BING.  Bright, wow.  But today when I stepped back in and took a look at them, they are rather pretty.

The scents are Summer Melon, Pina Colada, Ocean Beeze, Shortbread, and Mango.

I have used wax tarts for years.  I have a couple of electric tart warmers around my home.  I like using electric warmers because there is no open flame involved.  And another benefit is I can pop the wax out of the warmer after I use it, put the wax in a baggie and re-use it at a later date.  I then can melt another wax tart fragrance.  Like soaps, I guess I have an addiction to fragrances.

I also chose to begin my testing and making of candles with votives.  I love the small votive cups.  I can burn one of my votives for 18-21 hours (or longer) in a proper votive cup, with proper care.  I feel rather safe using these as well.  I always place them on a surface that is non-flammable, like a stove top.  I never place them below a curtain, fabric, or a wooden shelf or cabinet, etc… .  And I never leave a candle unattended.

I will also be making glass jar candles.  I have not decided on jelly jars or the larger jars made specifically for candles.  I just do not know yet!

I can tell you this, the candles in the photograph are made from very fine quality soy wax.   The candles are fragranced at the maximum allowable percentage.  And they contain dyes made specifically for candles, safety in mind as well.  The wicks are also made of quality materials (lead free).

My focus will be quality (ecologically happy wax, scent, burn time, and the suppliers reports of saftey tested materials).

I would love to hear your comments, concerns, questions, etc… ! Bring them on, you are a BIG help to me!

Candles have never been far from my mind.  I tried them once, back in 2004 when I started making soap.  I threw some together, never tried to sell them, but now I think the time is right.  Sell the tarts and candles individually perhaps, but more than likely in gift sets.  An Ocean Breeze gift set…mmm.

I used to shop 3 or 4 times a year in a very small artist colony/resort town in Indiana.  I parked my car in a specific spot and had my foot trip through town very well planned out.  First I hit up the perfume shop.  They made perfumes to order, better than those in the department stores.  Next would be the herbal shop where I bought my handcrafted rustic soaps.  By this time I was wearing myself out with the excitement of what was in my shopping bags! Next were the candle shops.  Always some handcrafted potpourri (messy stuff) and candles.  I guess scent has always been something I love!

Have a beautiful Monday!

Messies Anonymous

MessyI might need to join this group! You know, I think I have heard the words “you first have to admit you have a problem before you can fix it.”  Oh oh.  This week I have went from self-help (finding inner peace by finishing things already started, oink, oink) to self-help (healthy brain food), now, Messies Anonymous?!

I listen to various radio programs when I am out and about, sometimes I catch a few words even between the house and the barn.  This Friday I was driving to pick up grain for the goats.  The program on the radio grabbed my attention to the extent that I changed my well thought out chore schedule in mid-stream (it was one of those stop 4 places in 45 minutes trips).  I even turned the truck’s cruise control on so I would not drive over 55 MPH.  I was mesmerized.

As I listened to the radio conversation about Messies (Vs. Neats), I thought to myself, “Surely I am not a Messy? No way!!!” But, yes, something sounded eerily familiar to me.

Just look at this photo, carefully.  I walked all around the house to find messes, and it was not difficult.  From a corner of my office, here is a porcelain dish pan that was purchased about 8 years ago, with the price tag (from the antiques house) still attached.  The jar that I use to store pens in is practically empty.  The pens are dumped in the bottom of the pan.  There is also a dust rag in the pan, hmmm…I might need to use that.  I used it once before.  The chair is an old office chair that really needs to go.  Then, there is my Scooby Doo.  Yes, he reminds me of my late boxer, Samson.  Then, folded on top is a curtain.  Yes, a curtain. A curtain that I removed a few months back.   To the left, along the wall, is the leaf from one of the dining tables.  Now, I do need to resurrect myself just slightly, only 2 of the rooms in my house are messy, the rest have no clutter, nothing but dust now and then.  My desk, kitchen and soap shop are clutter free as well.  It is a start, right?!

As I looked for a messy setting for a photo I laughed and giggled.  As the speaker said, “A Messy does not see their mess like a Neat does.”  She is right! When you look through a different pair of eyes you see exactly where you are at.  You see the things you keep because you think you will use them someday.  Clutter.

It isn’t easy being messy.  I feel horribly guilty.  Not that I have time to clean each and eveyr day (I work around the clock on some days).  At least once a week the thought crosses my mind, “If only I could have someone clean my house for $25.00!” Uh huh…that’s going to happen! And, God wants us to be neat and clean, he wants us to see things that are beautiful.  Double guilt.  Helllppp meee…tee hee.  As the speaker (Ms. Felton) said, we are all born with certain things we need to overcome.  I agree!! But…I posted a while back about building on strengths and ignoring the weaknesses, does this count (I ask myself)? No!

Hilarious and “out there” as it seems, Ms. Sandra Felton, touched my heart.  She is a self-proclaimed Messy.  She has written books, developed groups, even online Yahoo groups devoted to Messies.  Her website is, www.messies.com.  Yes, you got it, she is real, and I even see a small TM next to some of her “products.”  Did someone mention pokes at self-help gurus? Well, we will leave Ms. Felton out of this, I need her today (as I shake my finger at you, tee hee), funny!

I hope you enjoyed my confession, ha, and Messies Anonymous, here I come (perhaps in the near future)!

Again, no poking allowed, but I thought you would enjoy Ms. Feltons day one plan:

Step One

Make a strong take-off every day. A good take-off sets the tone of the day. When you:

WAKE UP — set a time
JUMP UP — don’t lie in bed, there’s a wonderful world waiting
MAKE UP — the bed immediately, automatically
EAT UP — something nutritious
WASH UP — bathe body or wash face
BRUSH UP — take care of your teeth
DRESS UP — completely from head to toe including hair, shoes, and makeup of some kind on your face
LOOK UP — somewhere during the day you need to turn your heart upward to God (a great way to start the day)

Add any other steps you may need to your flight plan, like TAKE A WALK. They don’t have to end with UP.

This list comes from The Organizer Lady® and is sent weekly along with the daily news reminder to those who subscribe.

Final note:  I do these things already, except for the making up the bed…I guess I am salvageable!!!! Well…I do not dress up for the goats, either.  Perhaps I should???  And I definitely do not have aisles that I have to clear just to walk from room to room, I just tend to go blind to the obvious from time to time.

Are you a Messy, or are you a Neat?

Have a wonderful Sunday, relax, smell the roses, and remember me the next time you dust the furniture…ask me how I am progressing with my spring cleaning!

Top Brain Foods

850657_bucket_o_berries

A far cry from yesterday’s piglet festival post…I received a booklet from the grocery store a week or so ago.  Much to my surprise there was a lot of good information inside, not just coupons and recipes.  It has not hit the trash can yet, so it still holds my interest.  In turn, I began reading more health brain food articles across the Internet.  Food for thought, seems it is not just an old saying.

Do you know the #1 food that can assist with memory problems, and even reverse some age-related memory loss? Blueberries.  Across the board, blueberries are THE word.  And blueberries are also cancer-fighting as well.  It appears blueberries can be labeled a “superfood,” based on the memory and cancer-fighting boosts they give to our body.

Do you know what the #1 beverage is for assisting with a huge variety of health issues? Green tea.  Cold or hot, sweetened or unsweetened, green tea has been shown to decrease the presence of enzymes associated with Alzheimer’s disease.  Green tea has also been reported to help headaches, depression, cholesterol, arthritis, and immunity function.  Black tea is also good for the health, however, and surprisingly, the healthy effects in the body last much longer with green tea.

Fish (or foods high in Omega-3 fats) also does the brain big favors.  Omega-3 fats help the brain relay and transmit information more effectively.  Brain Dean, MS, RD, says that much of our brain is composed of fats, and the type of fats we eat are reflected in the type of fats in our brain, he says, “It is a classic example of, you are what you eat.” Scary to some of us? Yes!

Grape juice may reduce inflammation in the brain which is an important factor when treating Alzheimer’s and other age-related memory problems.  Some say grape juice also has similar benefits to red wine, which helps the blood cholesterol, helps to prevent blood clots, and to maintain blood pressure.  The general recommendation is 4-6 ounces a day.

Generally speaking, any food or drink that is healthy enough to help lower and maintain the body’s cholesterol levels, is also a good “brain food,” foods that are low in fat and high in fiber.

Foods that can/might impair brain function are those high in carbohydrates (but low in fiber), and high fat foods (saturated fats), such as red meat.

Perhaps now I can make better purchases at the grocery store…help these silly little bouts of forgetfulness that bestow me now and then? One would only hope!  But…then…I wouldn’t want to give up the chocolate cravings, would I???

Have a relaxing weekend!

Here is some very important information that I am passing on to you because it definitely works, and we could all use a little more calmness in our lives.  By following the simple advice I heard on a talk show, you too can find inner peace.  The doctor on the show proclaimed, “The way to achieve inner peace is to finish all the things you have started and have never had the time to finish.”

I thought about this for the longest time.  I then looked around my house to see all the things I started and hadn’t found the time to finish.  I decided that today was the day to change, so before leaving the house this morning, I finished off a 2-liter bottle of Mt. Dew, a bottle of some  alcoholic beverage, a package of Oreo’s, a pound package of peanut M&M’s, the rest of last night’s strawberry cheesecake, some Doritos, and a box of chocolate truffles left over from Valentine’s day.

I really think that doctor knew what he was talking about because you have no idea how amazingly great I feel right now.  I can’t wait to see what I can finish tomorrow!

If I “finished” all of that I think I would be sick for a week…but I would certainly think I felt that inner peace for a while! Ha ha ha!

I am still working on rearranging the categories on this blog.  Thought a humor category post here and there ought to be good for many of us!

Updated Photos

I am not a person that likes to share my photo.  Perhaps it comes from my childhood.  I was one of those extremely shy kids that wanted to hide behind her mother’s skirts.  Those days have pretty much evaporated.  No, I am not one that likes to display myself very easily.  I am still very modest.  But I am a far cry from who I was a number of years back!

I thank my prior boss, Wendy, for chipping the remainder of that shyness away from me.  I recently met back up with Wendy, online, and we are both overjoyed to have our connections again.  She was, and still is, very inspirational to me.   Inspirations in our lives is one of my upcoming blog post topics.

Anyhow…out with the old…in with the new.  The 5 year old photo that I use on all of my accounts is going to go “poof,” and I am determined to keep up with the new.  Love my salt and pepper hair, ladies (and gents)…I no longer color.  And I am proud of it!

I am a numbers person.  I love to work out fine details, math-wise, and I love to calculate statistics.

I have been thinking about sales recently and how I have noticed customers that come back time and time again to purchase soap and lotion.  But I had no idea how many actually were returning.  So, I did some calculating.

I am going to brag…shout out for myself…33% of my sales are customers that have returned!

On the average, a small business can expect 20% of their sales to come from repeat customers.  I am out ahead of those statistics.

What can I say?

Thank you to my repeat customers (and my first time customers as well)!!!! Thank you, thank you, and thank you.  I am enjoying the work that I created for myself, and I am glad that you (apparently) are enjoying the products that I craft.

And I just may have a special gift announcement in the near future, based on a particular number, but I have not determined if that number will be a paid receipt number, the number of repeat customers, or  comments.  We shall see…I want to be fair and square!

Pink Ladies 001

(Grandma’s) Copper Penny Carrots

2 lb pkg fresh carrots

1 onion

1 green pepper

1 can tomato soup

3/4 c vinegar

3/4 c vegetable oil

1 c sugar

1 tsp prepared mustard and Worcestershire sauce

salt and pepper

Peel and clean carrots.  Cook until tender, drain and slice.  Place in a bowl.  Mix the rest of the ingredients in pan and cook until heated, then pour over carrots.  Let set overnight.  Salt and pepper to taste.

Grandma has been on my mind this week.  I miss her! Oddly, I do not remember these flowers ever popping up before, 3 of them did this week.  Grandma had flowers such as these in her yard.  She called them Pink Ladies.  She told me that they only bloom once a year and they bloom for only one day.  I guess I am about to find that out.

By the way, I did a search on Pink Ladies and found Pink Ladies Slippers, which could be another variety of these flowers.  They apparently also grow on long single stems.  Whatever the true name of the flowers are, they are beautiful.

The copper penny carrot recipe was grandma’s.  Each time I visited her home she would tell me, “These are Father Pat’s favorites.  He always asks me for them when he visits.”  I would imagine he did.

The last time I visited grandma in the nursing home, she talked to me about Mary, the grand-daughter named after herself (and her mother).  She also talked about her visit from Father Pat.  As I left she hugged me and said, “You are such a sweet lady, you will come back and see me?” That was good enough for me.  She remembered Mary, she just could no longer link her to me.

A few days later I received the call.  Grandmother was in the hospital, and it was not good.  I walked into the hospital lobby and was greeted by a man that I did not know, a pastor, a man also declared legally blind.  He really could not see me, he later told me.  He walked up to me, held my hand and said, “I am father Pat.”  I thought my heart would stop right then and there.  I thought I was too late.  “I am going to lead you to her room.  You need to pray for her, she is at peace.”  He walked me up and down the corridors.  We took the various elevators.  He knew his way around.  He talked lovingly of my grandmother.  I then knew why grandmother spoke so highly of Father Pat.  He also told me that several days before her hospitalization he had visited her and she asked him to pray with her.  She was able to recite everything that she knew, and spiritually she was ready to leave this earth apparently.  And at those words my heart was broken, but I was at peace because my grandmother did the right thing.  It gave me strength that was immeasurable.

I stayed with my grandmother until the end that day.  I held her hand and talked to her about letting go, and even though she did not answer me, we talked about where she was going.  It was beautiful.

So…there is my story about copper penny carrots (almost the color of Father Pat’s hair), big grin!!!

By the way, the recipe calls for Mazola oil.  And 3/4 C is a lot of oil…in my opinion!

Have a beautiful Tuesday!
