Majestic Strength

I am a huge believer that each person is blessed with talents and strengths.

I am also a huge believer of not focusing on your own weaknesses.

When you focus on your strengths you get better at “your best.”

When you focus on your weaknesses you draw away from what is best about you.

Have you ever been very frustrated at something that you thought you should be an instant success at? Something that simply baffled you to no end? When that happens it does not mean you are a failure.  It means you need to give yourself time and patience.

Focus on what you are best at, what comes naturally to you.  Your talents will then shine, and your healthy well-being will thank you for it.

I was a very shy child.  Despite my quietness, I belonged to many organizations that included Girl Scouts, a bowling league, and an organized Sunday School class (that I simply would not miss).  But when it came down to day to day steps of putting myself out there, except for time spent with my closest of friends, I enjoyed relaxing at home.

I’ll give you an example of how shy I really was.   One day my family and I were dining in a McDonald’s near our home.  I was the one sitting on the outside of the booth.  My mother asked me to get up and ask for catsup (there were no catsup pumps in those days).  I refused.  I refused to walk in front of people.  I refused to ask the workers behind the counter for catsup! Mom, to say the least, wasn’t very appreciative of it.  She certainly mumbled a few words as she pushed by me.

Many, many years later, the company I worked for placed me in a leadership training group.  Part of our training included putting together a presentation on a topic we felt strongly about.  We practiced together, we put materials together, but come the day of the presentation, my turn at the bat, I could not speak.  I could not get one word out of my mouth.  Instantaneous laryngitis, if there is such a thing.  Ugh!

I looked into the eyes of the group we were speaking to, probably 50 people, amongst them my boss, his boss, and the president of the company.  My thoughts were, “There goes my chance for advancement.”  I will never forget the look on my boss’s face as he crossed his arms over his chest, as he leaned back in his chair, grinning ever so slightly.

Nothing was said afterwards.

A few weeks later my boss called me into his office.  He announced, “We are giving you a new assignment.”  You could have knocked me over with a toothpick.  He said I was going to be in charge of training in our area, holding a presentation type of training session every two weeks, writing my own training materials, etc… .  I sat in silence for a few moments before I uttered, “You did see what happened a few weeks ago” Yes, of course he did, and “they” thought this new assignment was exactly what I needed.

You bet it was.  I flew with it.  I loved it.  I learned from it.  I grew from it.

See, what I am writing about today isn’t about me, it is encouragement to those of you that think you cannot.  You can.

I get asked to do “programs” from time to time.  I have talked about social media, marketing, soap making, goats, my passions, and I even talk about my story (how I went from a corporate desk job to a farmer that owns a soap company).

The first program that I did I experienced the instant laryngitis again.  It did not last long.  I learned to speak as naturally as possible.  I learned that people really were interested, even though I am still baffled as to why.  When the questions began pouring in after the first program I realized that I made a difference, and now I even encourage a few questions during the programs, and I treasure the questions like crazy.  The interaction is priceless.  I love to share my story, if it makes someone’s day.

From the deepest of my being, I back this statement up, do not say or think you cannot do it, because yes you can.  It takes a lot of time, effort, and self-encouragement, but if I can do it, so can you!

Lighten Your Heart - Fly Like A Butterfly

When I am touched by something, or someone, that I cannot help, I feel compelled to write about it, hoping that it will touch another life in a positive manner.  Many of the posts in my Inspirations and General Reflections categories came about from something such as this…

For those that have a tender heart.

We all get stung now and then.  Little stings that seem to pop out of nowhere.

It is good to love and care.

But, please do not allow your own energy to drip and drain away because another being has been insensitive.  Forgive.

Take a big healthy breath.

Be content because you do care.

And then, live.

When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.”  Proverbs 4:12

Aleecia and Her New Buckling Enjoying Sunshine

I am a person that has an upbeat demeanor.

I try to be happy.  I try to be positive.  I try so very hard to not let anything in life beat me up.

But, February 2010, really did do a number on me.  Parts of March slid into that range as well.  It was a struggle, but I maintained!

The sunshine is now glorious.

The warmth is healing.

Determination pays off.  There is nothing worse, in my opinion, than a dismal person that likes to share the wealth.  I avoid it at all costs.

Dismal is equal to a lack of sunshine.

We all owe it to each other, a sunny disposition that is.

Do you agree?

The librarian called to tell me the book I had ordered was in.  After reading the title she giggled and said, “You know, I do not think I will ever know what really motivates me.”  I roared with laughter.  It was how she said it!

Then I thought about it.

What does motivate me?

Accomplishing things, ending the day with progress.  People, knowing that others are doing well, happy.  My faith, very much keeps me centered.  And quiet times are motivating as well.

What motivates you?

I do not get de-motivated often.  I think the worst for me is being misunderstood badly.  That is the only thing that I can recall that causes the train engine to come to a smashing halt.

What about you?

Speaking of motivation, another blog post, another day, motivating others is very difficult when you do not know what makes a person tick.  I really do hold a fondness for self-motivation in individuals.

Now, how to motivate my physically tired body to make soap today! Ha! I need to ponder that idea.

At times the little things in our lives seem huge.  If a person allows it to happen, they can feel very much overwhelmed.

I had a very off-key week that began with the death of my mother-in-law.  Several of my does had kids and did not want to take care of their newborns for a few days.  Annie gave birth to two live kids, and one very dead one.  She is much better, another 3 or 4 days and we’ll be out of the woods.  Her kids are fine, nursing on bottles.  We have had water problems, thank goodness for all of the rain.  I now have oodles of beautiful rain water for the goats.

Overall, I decided to focus on what is good.  Focus on what needed to be done.  Focus on what was directly in front of me.  It worked, it always does.

I did not focus on anything that was not positive.  My prayers included thanks for the troubles.  I knew I would learn and grow from them.  I did.

Life is good despite the hardships.  The more we can edure, the stronger person we become, and perhaps, in turn, we can help others.

Have a beautiful weekend!

About 2 weeks ago I posted (here) “My plan, as of today, is to begin scheduling in paperwork time.  I will not read email during my paperwork hour.  I will not shop for supplies.  I will not plan the next bar of soap.  During my scheduled time I will be wiping out paperwork.”

I promised to follow up with you.  And I have good news.  Despite the sleepless nights due to barn activity, and a couple of weeks with no time to complete anything but the sheer necessities, I have made progress.

For the tasks that seem daunting, like paperwork, scheduling in time to focus on only the one task, allowing nothing to interfere, does work!

Lesson learned:  (even when it is a task that is loathed) stay on top of it, make an appointment to get it completed, no procrastination, total focus.  It makes the job so much easier.

Like the beautiful sunny day we are experiencing in Ohio today (the first in almost a month), this new centering has allowed the sunshine back into parts of my daily schedule.

For those of you that said you were encouraged to give it a try, scheduling in time to complete a task/chore, has it been a positive experience for you too?

This has been an exceptionally challenging week.

Yesterday I seemed to hit one speed bump after another in the office.  Speed bumps of challenges.

The weather has been awful.  Dark.  Windy.  Gray.  Seems to end for a day and returns.  My knees hurt from multiple trips to the barn, in snow too deep for our tractor to clear the steep barn drive.

Yesterday, however, I was reminded of who and where I really am in this world.

I am blessed.  As I stare out my office window at the beautiful landscape I remind myself that I am sitting in a warm chair, in a warm room, with electricity.

My heart reaches out to those that have nothing.

When I spilled milk this morning for the house baby, as the little tike cried louder and louder, and my body wasn’t functioning all that well yet, I remembered my blessings.

Have a beautiful day, whatever you do! I hope you remember to count your blessings too.

Today I am talking about an organization that does a tremendous service for impoverished people around the world.  The name and link to the organization is CleanTheWorld.org

I will quote to you, in their own words, what Clean The World is about, “CTW is a non-profit, charitable organization that recycles soap, shampoo and lotion discarded by hotels, and distributes the recycled products worldwide to people who need it to prevent the spread of disease and death.”

Clean The World was in service prior to the earthquake in Haiti.  More than ever, they need additional funds, soap and shampoo, and volunteers to aid with relief efforts.

I am inspired and touched by the videos on the Clean the World site.  I hope you are able to watch and see for yourself the magnificent efforts of CTW.

Thank you, and God bless!

Honey Oatmeal and Rosemary Mint Goat Milk Soap

Today, as I cut two batches of fresh soap, I thought about my shop, the past year, and how I plan to grow (in both a personal and business sense) in 2010.

Like loaves of soap, formed from an idea, cut into bars, ready to be placed on the curing rack until ready for use, my mind is carving out my future endeavors, deciding how to solidify my dreams.

Have you put together solid plans for 2010? Or, like me, have you made sure most plans are in order, ready for accomplishment (written and measurable), with a few ideas still dangling? Perhaps you know what you want to do, but you are not sure when or how it is going to happen.

I treasure the idea of making things happen.

I see good things evolving.  Many are reaching out to better themselves.  Many are taking classes, planning businesses, re-thinking budgets, arriving at a calmer place in life.  Some of these self-improvements were forced on by the economy, but evolved into wonderful opportunities for the future.

How many times have you said, “I’ve always wanted to do that!” Think about it…what have you always wanted to do? What is holding you back?

I am going to do what I have dreamed of doing.  And the only way to do it is to take the first steps, then keep moving.

How about you?

May the dreams of your past be the reality of your future.  Author Unknown
