Fairly often I find people to be inspirational, like I did here, the business-owner who genuinely cares about her customers, and here, the elderly person that said wisely “to never quit.”

Yesterday, after being invited into his office to use a fax machine, I realized just how inspirational a particular real estate agent (unamed on purpose in this post) is as a business owner and as a person.

What I see is an older gentlemen that hops on his scooter, in his sharp business suit, donning a helmet (like a Harley rider might…giving the hired help a giggle-of-their life), riding in and out of construction sites with no fear, and visiting college dorms to ensure the maintenance calls are being met.

So, what is so striking about all of that?

He gives.  While I was in his office he ensured I had a pen, and an umbrella (for the upcoming rain), and a comfortable seat.  As he handed a soda to me, he said it might be “less than ice-cold.”  Trust me, it was cold!

He ensures politeness emits from his lips.  He ensures the humans around him are comfortable.  Yet, he gets on his scooter, fearlessly, taking care of business, making sure each job is completed, not caring what anyone thinks.  He does not fit into anyone’s mirror image.  He is focused.  He is precise.  And I can see how he has done as well as he has in life.  What an image.

I hope I can leave a smidget of such a good impression on people.

Wouldn’t it be fantastic if we could do one-on-one business with many more individuals on such a human playing field?

I entered the new soap studio this morning with the thought that I would have the construction materials, tools, and other items removed from the product “make” areas, and that every surface would be scoured down to spic-and-span clean.

It felt good to accomplish my goals today.

I spoke more in the video about the equipment (beginning with the Army green shipping shelves that were gifted), my talking grew rather lengthy.  Note to self:  no more 7 minute videos! You can tell, I have always enjoyed things that have a “history” or a story to tell.

I hope you stick around long enough, to the end of the video, to hear my real message.  I mean every word of it!

Tomorrow we can begin moving in products, supplies, inventory, and the remainder of the shelving, equipment and work tables.

I am looking forward to knowing that I have everything in one place once again!

We disappeared yesterday, went M.I.A. (missing in action).  It was the first time we had taken a day off from work, on a workday, for well over a year!

We had a blast.  We rode our bikes.  They are now very dusty.  We ended up on a detour due to a closed road.  We rode over hills, on gravel, on partially paved roads, in the woods, and waved at Amish children along the way.  Adams County Ohio has some unbelievable scenery and back roads.  I will be doing it all again!

I shot the video below as an experiment, to see how it uploads to my blog (how it looks and sounds).  Now that I watch it, it seems rather comical.  I spoke rather slowly, so giggle if you want to! The virgin video…tee hee! We attended several festivals yesterday, the first (where the video was shot, in the barn) The Old Tyme Herb Festival.  We also attended the Appalachian Artisan’s Festival.

As I stood in the aisle of the barn, enthused by all of the people that I had met, enthused by the items in the barn (I am in love with OLD)! I didn’t care who listened to me or saw me talking to a video camera, funny! Enjoy!

As we had announced, the publish date of our new website was to be 10/9/2011 (on the 3rd anniversary of our current website).

Little technical bumps in the road have occurred, amounting to a short delay.  The new website will be happening, TBA (to be announced)!

Until then, we’ll keep on doing what we are keeping-on-doing!

It has been a long haul.  An entire winter of work and (what seemed like) a very quick summer.

We began wiring the soap studio, the first time the property ever had electricity, in December.  We would arrive early in the day to face -5 degree temperatures, trying to feed a large electrical cable into conduit.  It simply would not bend. We would arrive again later in the evening, again -5 degrees, to find the cable would not flex at all.  We clearly remember the day the temperature climbed to 10 degrees.  The cable flexed.  My husband was standing outside on a 30′ ladder, with me inside the barn (on a ladder almost 30′ leaning against the open rafters).  10 degrees allowed us to fish the electric lines through conduit into the breaker box.  Celebration! We called the power company with no hesitation, POWER US UP!

That was the beginning of transforming the little red pole barn, that used to house a tractor on a gravel floor, to a framed in little red soap house with windows, a concrete floor, a lot of insulation, and beautiful interior white steel walls (and my wish to leave two original wood beams exposed).

We are nearing the finish of the new soap workshoop.  Soon to rearrange the stainless steel kitchen fixtures that I purchased from a Cincinnati school auction 6 months ago to a very workable soap studio!

Below is a section of the front area that we will keep on reserve, with plans to turn into a storefront, open 1-2 days a week.  Too many folks have called in for a visit to the farm/soap studio.  They need to be able to come on down to Annie’s Little Red Soap Shop!

Hilarious nuts they are, food driven animals…I get so much enjoyment from  watching their antics!

What Is Success?

What is the meaning of success?

I believe success is an individual state of being.

Success does not necessarily equate to a fancy car in the garage, or the ownership of money that flows into a bank account like free running water.

A business can be called successful because it reachs and exceeds it’s own set of goals.

Success is something that each person, each company, each entity determines (and pre-determines).   It is measured by goals, wants, wishes, and expectations in life.

And who says the meaning of success isn’t as simple as the ability to find true happiness and contentment in any situation in life?

Something to think about.

Fresh is hot this fall…fresh scent that is!

Annie’s Ocean Breeze goat milk soap is right in step, back on our store shelves (for a limited time).

Ocean Breeze has a light clean scent, silky lather, and (as always) we’ve loaded-it-up with skin loving shea butter.

Enjoy!

Sometimes we need a course on goat psychology…but then, if we understand them tomorrow, we might not understand them the next day.

We moved a handful of goats to the new farm, ahead of the others.

We did not mow the tall grass in their new pasture.  We also knew the cedars and the tree saplings would be a nutrition-filled delicacy for the goats as well.

We chose the thinnest, oldest, and most “needy” of our “girls” for the first move.  I wanted them to experience the fresh new pasture.

Surprise!

We should have known.  No, in fact, we did know but never thought it would happen to our goats.  They did not touch the greenery for the first 3 days.  Each day when we arrived to feed hay, yes, we still supplement (in a lesser quantity), we observed the does getting thinner.

Our determination is that they were 1) stressed because we moved them, 2) spoiled to their old barn and twice-a-day hay feedings.  Of course, they had no idea we moved them from an almost bare lot to something totally alive and healthy!

The good news is they are now eating.

Lesson learned, and shared.  It really is best to not move an overly thin goat, or one that isn’t feeling well to begin with (our goats were not that serious).  Even if you are moving them to better conditions, they are sensitive animals and could become ill from stress alone.

All are happy now!

Compassion, a value to possess.  Sensitivity, don’t forget.

I hugged a friend who was recently declared free of cancer.  She looks so healthy.  She now has something missing.  Her very long hair.  Guess what else is missing? Empathy from others.  Strangers forget do not bother to see beyond her very short hair.  She really does not need to hear comments such as, “Why do they let people in here like that?” She is a cancer survivor that now is full of life, learning to put on a deaf ear.

I am not perfect.  I have caught myself thinking before I know the facts.  We always have room to get better, to grow, and to never judge the book by its cover.

P.S. My friend looks beautiful in her new “do.”
