America, the home of the free and the brave...

Do you enjoy natural products? Do you enjoy safe personal care products? Do you want the freedom to decide what products you use to cleanse your body, wash your hair, brush your teeth with? If proposed legislation finds its way through the doors, you may no longer have that choice.

I will very briefly explain (in my own simple words) the Colorado Personal Care Products Act, coming up for discussion March 1, 2010, House Bill 10-1248.

If the bill passes, anyone living in the state of Colorado will not be able to purchase personal care products that contain (but are not limited to) FD&C dyes, quite a few essential oils (all natural), most flavor oils (even natural ones), and all man-made fragrances (that have already been deemed safe by the FDA).

For the personal care product maker (including myself) I will no longer be able to ship any products into the state of Colorado that contain any of the items mentioned above (and more).

Good-bye Avon, good-bye Mary Kay, good-bye buying personal care items from people such as myself that pride themselves on purity, un-compromised ingredients, cleanliness, and personal safety.  If the bill passes it will affect Colorado first, but I can see it snowballing to your own state and mine.

What is their thinking? They want to eliminate any ingredients that can lead to cancer.  The bill is written in very broad terms.  It is not clear how testing will be completed.  It is not clear if testing, for example, will include one safe drop of essential oil, or an IV line dripping with no dilution, which will surely make a rat sick, filled with cancer.

In my own personal life, this bill could affect me greatly (my own health care and business).  It can affect your choice of personal care items.  It can affect the choice of natural and holistic care that you choose to give yourself and your family.  A few nights ago I made a rub for myself, for sore legs and knees.  If this bill passes, I will no longer be able to obtain the very natural, beautiful oils that I used to take care of my body safely.

Can you help?

Perhaps you can, and I hope you do.  March 1, 2010 is the day they will be listening to us (small and large business owners, and consumers).

To read in more detail, including links to the proposed act itself, please go to:  The Slippery Slope of Bad Science, written byKayla Fioravanti, of Essential Wholesale.  It is eye-opening!

Do an online search for this bill as well.  There are many interesting articles written by consumers and small business owners that more deeply explain the ramifications of the proposed bill.

In closing, I shake my head at the items that can be purchased that may lead to cancer, #1 cigarettes, which are money-makers, and definitely not banned.  So, why make it illegal to take care of our own bodies as we see fit? A drop of essential oil isn’t going to make a person sick, nor is our bar of soap so carefully made (with ingredients that have already been proven safe). Where are our American rights going?

Lavender Orange Goat Milk Soap

Lavender and Sweet Orange Goat Milk Soap

Today’s Product Monday is not about a product that is available in the online soap store.  I am making an announcement.

My 2010 plans include heading back into all natural, and mainly near natural soaps.  I will be dropping soap recipes scented entirely from artificial fragrances.

After I began making soap in 2003, I drifted into adding fragrance oils to my products.  Fragrance oils allowed me to bring scents into the products that were not available via essential oils, however, using fragrance is “bugging” me at this time.  I purchase product supplies, including fragrances, that are skin-safe and very much quality minded…but that does not erase the fact that some of the fragrance is not entirely natural.

A business owner, and people in general, go through welcomed transitions in their lives.  They end up doing what is best for their businesses, their lives, and their customers, and getting there means always remaining flexible enough to change! With this particular change, I see Annie’s Goat Hill returning to the original track, using essential oil and all-natural blends that I am very pleased with, blends that reflect the bounty that nature provides!

The featured soap in this post, by the way, is wonderfully scented with lavender and sweet orange oil.  I cut the loaf into bars last night, lovely! I will post pictures today.  I have also been muddling my way through the instruction manual that came with a new camera!

Have a wonderful day!

The joys of owning a small business are never-ending.  I really am delighted to be able to offer one-on-one service.

In most cases, when an order is received I make goat milk lotion fresh.  When I make lotion fresh it allows the “best used by date” to be one year from date of purchase.

There are also other options when ordering goat milk lotion:

  • Order the thickness of your lotion (example:  if you want a thinner or thicker lotion)
  • Order the fragrance strength (light or heavy)
  • Request a particular fragrance (fragrance is not limited to those that are listed on the website)
  • Inquire about a formula that is suited to your complexion needs

As a customer said to me today, “It was very nice talking with you.  I enjoyed it!”  Honestly, I always enjoy talking with customers too!

Goat Milk Soap

There are a variety of ways to save when shopping in the Annie’s Goat Hill goat milk soap store.

  • There are bargain basement “2nds”  in the back of the soap store!  Why (“Y”) a sale? Normally these soaps are smaller (3.0-3.75 oz), some have faded scent, not as pretty, but perfectly good goat milk soaps! Good for the budget-minded.  Each product description clearly explains why the product is discounted.
  • A 5-bar volume discount is also available.  The soaps are not “2nds,” however, they may range 3.5-4.25 ounces.  $17.00 plus shipping is a great deal for 5 bars of skin loving goat milk soap.  The bars are your choice of soaps.  You may order more than one 5-bar set.
  • Goat milk soap by the log.  The log is sent to you after it cures (3-4 weeks).  You slice off whatever you want, whenever you want, for whomever you want.  A great discount at 58.00 (plus shipping) for 5+ pounds of soap!

Thank you to my customers for asking such thought filled questions! I love to answer you here.  You never know when someone might be wanting to ask the very same question!

Now…for a brief word on discounts.  We are living in a tough economy, but I do not believe in marking down products just to get them sold.  I know you would rather receive the value of the products and services you pay for rather than money back in your pocket.  Money back in your pocket is nothing when it equates to poor quality! For the sake of doing great business, and because I remember when I purchased hand-crafted soaps by the numbers, volume discounts are perfectly in line with my way of thinking!

Enjoy!

Annie's Goat Milk Soap Love Basket

One of my goals in 2010 is to offer more gift sets, new products, and to bring in the candles that I have been talking about for much too long!  I am excited to begin meeting goals with the announcement of a new gift basket!

The Annie’s Goat Milk Soap Love Basket is filled with luscious items that can help transform a bath into a spa experience!  The products are scented with the beautiful Annie’s Love fragrance (similar to Victoria’s Secret Love Spell).

Included in the gift basket:

  • sugar scrub (with sweet almond oil, vitamin e and evening primrose oil) 6 oz.
  • fizzy mineral salts for the bath 10 oz.
  • goat milk lotion 4 oz.
  • goat milk soap approx 4.25 oz.
  • soy votive candle

Have you ever used a sugar scrub? A sugar scrub is wonderful for the rough areas of the body that suffer from the elements of winter.  I use it anywhere on the body that needs a boost from gentle exfoliation (to slough off dry dead skin).  I occasionally use the scrub on my face.  But, I recommend going very gentle with a facial scrub.  Facial skin is much more delicate than skin further down the body!

A gift card is available, as well as drop-shipment for gift sending.  The gift set will be shrink wrapped, ensuring the basket arrives in excellent condition.

The basket itself is very attractive, with a removable liner.

The Annie’s Goat Milk Love Basket is now listed in my goat milk soap store.

Happy (early) Valentine’s Day!

Lilac Goat Milk Soap

Today I am covering a valued question from a customer.

The soap that I normally purchase from Annie’s Goat Hill Handcrafted Soaps smells slightly different than the soap I purchased in the past.  Did the recipe change?

Essential oils are natural.  An essential oil can differ for various reasons.  Factors that play into variances in essential oils are:  the plant crop, the manufacturer (and distillation method), the region/climate the plant is harvested in, and the harvest practices.

Essential oils, like a good perfume, can age somewhat in the bottle.  With good storage practices, essential oils can actually strengthen with time.

The creation of a natural soap requires careful measuring and tracking.  Each recipe is followed to a “t,” using an electronic scale that weighs the ingredients to the tenth of an ounce.  Even with careful measurements there are additional factors that can affect the soap from batch to batch.

  • Season – humidity and temperature play a role in the soapmakers crafting practices.   A difference in room temperature can greatly affect the first 12-24 hours of soap, changing the insulation needs, which could greatly affect the hardness and scent of the soap.
  • Milk – varies from season to season.  Have you heard the term “grass fed beef”? I can attest to grass fed milk.  It is sweeter.  Sweeter equates to more sugar in the soap recipe, which in turn affects the entire stability of a batch of soap.
  • Age – of the actual soap bar itself.  The curing process  (4-6 weeks) not only allows the soap to become more mild, it also gives the soap time to harden (the moisture content in the soap drops drastically).  I personally prefer an older bar of goat milk soap, especially one of my all natural soaps (some soaps contain man-made fragrances).

So…to wrap this up, with all of the careful intentions in place,  natural soap can differ slightly from batch to batch!

I love questions, please keep them coming!

Are you ready for Christmas?

Usually I do not know how to answer that question because I do not do a lot of decorating at Christmas, and gift buying is limited to a few special little ones.

This year I am ready.  I went pink.

No, I didn’t put up a pink Christmas tree.  The photo did remind me, however, of how I do my shopping.  For the grand daughters, and regardless of what I set out to purchase, I end up with bags full of pink fluffy things.  You know, the comfy girly items from slippers to nightgowns, to soft fluffy pink blankets to snuggle under.

Today I will be putting up our tree.  Guess what? It isn’t pink.  It is a large ceramic tree, hand-painted, with beautiful boxers doing all sorts antics on and around the tree, along with garlands made from dog bones and other treats.  After my first boxer got busy with the Christmas tree about 7 years ago, and I still have the ornaments (many broken), I opted to go with a permanent tree that wasn’t in harm’s way.

I may just bring out my Christmas village as well.  My favorite pieces are the church and stable.

My husband has a head cold, and I am down in my back.  Funny how when I walk I feel as if my legs are going in one direction, my waist and back in another.  But, sales and soap making are right on target.  My in-store sale ends tomorrow, and the last day for priority shipping (to deliver by Christmas Day) is 12/21/09.  So…I am winding down in that respect.  I am blessed, absolutely blessed.  Very happy.  After Monday…I am going to recuperate at the desk, making business plans for 2010!

And…of course, I am going to enjoy my Christmas, with those that I love, and with the true meaning of CHRIST-mas close to my heart!

Have a wonderful day!

Just a little reminder…

To ensure delivery by Christmas, the cut-off date for Parcel Post (USPS)  is 12/14/09.  The cut-off date for Priority Mail  is 12/21/09.  I normally ship Priority Mail.  In most cases it is cheaper than Parcel Post.

In my own shipping department, orders must be received no later than 12/19/09 to ensure delivery by Christmas.

Reminder:  my Christmas Discount, 20% on all in-store product purchases, will remain in effect through 12/19/09.  The 20% is refunded electronically within 24 hours of receipt of order.  An email is sent when the refund is processed advising of the discount amount and the ship date.

As always, I do accept checks as well, if you wish to place a “manual” order, you may email me at anniesgoathill@gmail.com  .

For gift giving, I also drop ship to the address you specify, and add a Christmas tag with a hand-written message (of your choice).

Orange Mint Goat Milk Soap

Orange Mint Goat Milk Soap

My soap has to meet many standards.  These are my personal preferences:

  1. Mildness – The soap must not irritate the skin.  Each new recipe is people tested.  Other than washing with the soap, it is tongue tested.  Touch a sliver of the soap to the tip of the tongue. Even the slightest zap means the soap is not mild.
  2. Hardness – I do not like super hard soaps because they seem to lack in other necessary qualities, however, I do not accept a soft bar of soap either. I expect a bar of soap to last more than a handful of rounds in the shower!
  3. Scent – First, I follow the safety guidelines that are established (by the IFRA, International Fragrance Association).  Secondly, human comfort is priority.  Do I want skin irritation caused by the dumping of excessive fragrance in a product?  No.  On the other hand, I want the product to correctly reflect the description that is depicted.
  4. Color – I lean towards natural color, provided by essential oils, herbs, and clays.  I use colorants when necessary, with safety in mind.  Color varies when creating natural products.
  5. Lather – I expect lather, but not tons of bubbles.  Loads of bubbles tend to dry the skin out.  I want a smooth lather, with a slick glycerin glide that leaves the skin feeling silky.
  6. Milk – I handle the milk with care from collection to the time it is used in a product.  I taste test all of the milk before it goes into products.  The milk must fit into the nearly-organic category.
  7. Size – A full-sized bar must meet a weight average (at the 4th and 6th week) of 4.2-4.5 ounces.  Some soaps will continue to shrink as they lose moisture and harden, but they must remain within the correct weight range.
  8. Ingredients – I purchase from reliable suppliers that are quality, safety, non-animal cruelty, and regulation minded.  All ingredients are stored in proper conditions, kept fresh in my shop.

If a soap does not fit into my quality standards, it goes to the discount section of my online store.  I then clearly state why the soap is discounted.

If  a batch of soap is not good enough for the store, it goes to the trash can, myself, willing friends, or someone in need.

That wraps it up for now…now you know my picky side.  I don’t just make soap, I make soap that reflects my brand!
