The (Simple) Joys Of Networking

As a small business owner I find great joy in the various daily contacts that I make.

Many years ago I thought networking meant selling. It does not mean that at all! To network, you are communicating via a common thread.

The stone wall no longer holds anyone in. Networking can come from a blog post or comment, a tweet on Twitter, a post on Facebook, an email, or an actual conversation with a business owner, a banker, or it can be as simple as conversing with a person while standing in line at the post-office.

Owning an internet-based company in the country could be lonely. But it is not. I so much appreciate the contact. The contacts come with an added benefit, learning. Listen to your friends, your casual contacts, your customers. Really listen. We live in a fascinating world, a world full of brand-new knowledge, just waiting to be gained.

Who would ever think work could be so enjoyable?

My hope for everyone: work towards doing something you enjoy, and enjoy working it once you get there!

Creating Self-Sufficiency

leaves4_copy I made an announcement a few days ago that I was going to work all weekend to free myself up for Monday (today) and Tuesday. My statement ended with, “To free myself up for the blessings ahead.”

Eight words to describe the employment situation for many…jobs are not growing on trees these days.

Unemployment statistics are released quarterly, monthly, etc…, but I know first-hand that the statistics do not nearly include all that are unemployed. For example, they do not include those that cannot collect unemployment, those that are not eligible to apply for benefits.

My husband and I shut down a business right before the economy crashed. He hit the books, studied, took classes, and passed tests, just to find that his new career path had hit an all-time low.

But now we are fighting back, fighting back with our own fireballs.

What we have been working on is a new business that will ensure my husband is up and working again. His new skills will be put to use. I am a firm believer that there is good in all bad. Frustration and bitterness does not lead to good. What does lead to good is determination…a listening ear and eyes (our own), to what we are really supposed to be doing in life.

If I seem a bit distracted, I am. Is it affecting the farm and Annie’s Goat Hill Handcrafted Soaps? No. I am just a tad bit slower with email and comments on the blog this week.

Life is a beautiful thing. Sometimes we have to pull up the bootstraps and say, “I have had enough. I am determined to make my life a good one!” Determination, sheer will-power!

And, yes, we can use all of the prayers, good wishes, and positive thoughts that you might want to send!

What Is The Real Meaning Of Success?

According to Webster’s Dictionary the definition of success is “favorable result, gain.”

Few words, says a lot.

If I based my personal definition of success on the numerous pokes I receive daily to “get rich quick,” “work from home and make millions,” “overnight success guaranteed,” I would say success is defined by how much money we earn, and how quickly it is acquired.

If success is based on the money we earn, does it not require hard work?

A chunk of reality – if success is based on our relationships in life, does it not require caring about people?

Perhaps…just perhaps…we can throw our own the message right back at the pushers, “I got rich today!” Stun them, make them ask how we did it. The answer would be, “Because I treasure people and I worked hard to make a difference!”

There…isn’t that real success? After all, Webster’s definition is “favorable result.”
