goat milk soap www.anniesgoathill.com

I am thrilled to announce that we have returned to our normal 2 day shipping turnaround!

If you do order soap from us, however, keep in mind that orders are coming in quickly (like Christmas in August), so we may fall back another day before the month is over.

I also wanted to let you know that there is still a nice stock of goat milk soap in our inventory.

We did run out of our stamped soap boxes, and now are packaging goat milk soap in biodegradable cellophane bags.

Let me know if I can help you with anything.

Enjoy!

Mary

Hello to you!

Over the last year, many opportunities and changes in both my business, farm, and personal life, have been laid before me.

A lot of prayer, faith, and stamina led me to decisions that I know are right with God.  In fact, without a doubt, God is the one leading me down the new road. You do not dare say no to that! God says pivot, I am pivoting! Onwards!

I’ve made a video for you to watch (I apologize for cutting off the last line when I trimmed the video).  It was not easy to keep a straight face the first five times the camera and I went around! The last line said: my email address for Annie’s Goat Hill will remain active.  Please feel free to contact me.  I’ll miss your treasured words if you don’t!

Please watch my video here.

My tentative close date is August 31, 2012.

I plan to extend the $6.00 flat rate shipping (per shipping box) until the last bar of soap is sold.

After the soap is sold, I will still remain open to book sales, with more books on the way (yes!!), and bundled  soap making consultation packages (that I am very excited about)!

I cannot say thank you enough for your support! I am so grateful to have been able to make the connections that I have (I am not finished talking about this yet), and to have supplied you with the wonderful soap that included the beautiful milk that my girls produced.

In the upcoming weeks, I will be announcing the adventures that I have up my sleeve.  A new business has already been formed! I’ll reach so many more people as I move out and about in the world.  I can hardly wait!

God Bless.

Years ago, as new goat farmer, and as an owner of a business, I nearly toppled over with the desire to soak up as much information as I could.  The more I read, the more I wanted to learn. There was (and is) passion and vitality behind all of that!

This week’s Handmade Chat hit a home run with me.  Based on the strong momentum on the chat floor, as we discussed books throughout the hour, I was not the only person in attendance that was ready to run out to the library, or to the book store, to pick up a major list of new books!

Thank you Alyssa Middleton of @highwireinheels, for leading the wonderful chat!

Need I say more?

Here is a small sample from the chat:

How do you have the time to read when running a business?

  • @highwireinheels Even reading for 30 minutes, can help start your day right & give new ideas to think about/implement.
  • @INDIEassist This is a huge challenge. It needs to go into your Google calendar with everything else. Respect your own time!

The entire chat flowed with book recommendations and tips, too many to list here, like this one:

The transcript from the chat can be downloaded here.  If you are looking for a list of excellent books for a small business entrepreneur, start with printing the transcript!

I will lead next week’s #Handmade Chat, Thursday, 8/9/2012, at 8 p.m. ET, How To Manage Unhappy Customers.

We, the Handmade Chat team, look forward to seeing you there!

If you want to obtain sponsorship for your website, but do not know where to start, last night’s #HandmadeChat brimmed over with information and questions on that very topic.

Melissa Rivera, of Naturally Good Soaps, lead the energetic and instructive discussion.

Q2 WHY WOULD A BUSINESS WANT TO HAVE SPONSORS AT THEIR SITE?

@natgoodsoaps:

  • To expand a business model that connects site visitors with products or services they may wish to buy.
  •  To develop relationships with companies who can help your site visitors be successful
  • To offer a new service that increases your income while helping other people

Q3 ARE THERE ANY GUIDELINES FOR SEEKING OUT SPONSORS FOR YOUR SITE?

@natgoodsoaps:

  • Relevance: sponsor products and services should be relevant to your site audience
  •  Branding Fit: your brand should be a positive reflection of the sponsor, and vice versa
  • Audience: you need an audience at the site; sponsors are attracted to your numbers

@INDIEassist:

  • Keep that branding consistent across all channels. Online, print, product labels, etc.

Question from : @highwireinheels WHAT ARE GOOD NUMBERS TO ATTRACT SPONSORS?

@INDIEbusiness:

  •  No magic number. You sense it when you see your audience connecting with potential sponsors via your site
  • Really is no magic number.  But something starting with “1,000” begins to sound substantial enough to begin

You can download the rest of this discussion here.

#HandmadeChat is held every Thursday at 8PM ET on Twitter.  You may also want to follow @Handmade chat on Twitter.

The next #HandmadeChat – July 2, 8 pm ET, will be facilitated by Alyssa Middleton:  Favorite Small Business Success Books.

Giggles and Goat Milk Soap from the Red Barn Studio

It was fun.  It was impromptu.  And you got to see a curing rack full of soap.  Where’s the smell-o-vison?

And then, that’s not all of it.

As tired as I am (Can you tell by my silliness?), I went on to video #2.

planning productivity www.anniesgoathill.comIn any given business day – one hour slips by, then two, then three.  “Oh goodness, I am tired now.  And, you know, tomorrow is a new day.  Who is going to know that I didn’t spend any time on my business today?”

I can honestly say that I have been there.  It is very easy to not stay committed when I am only answering to myself.  But, am I answering to just myself? No.

I have customers that want great soap.  I have followers on Twitter that are not going to be interested if I only post tweets one day a week.  I also have products to market.  None of it is going to happen if I, or my help, do not implement plans.

So, what keeps me on the ball? I facilitated the #HandmadeChat this week, Organizing Your Day For Small Business Productivity.  I shared some of my tactics, and many others shared their terrific productivity tips too.  Here are a few of them:

Q1 WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT TASK YOU DO DAILY TO ENSURE YOUR BUSINESS RUNS SMOOTHLY?

@anniesgoathill Planning. Plan ahead! Do not operate without a game-plan. Time is money.

@INDIEbusiness Each night, I write down what specific things I will get done the next day. Keeps me on track, helps me avoid distractions.

@SkinCaringSoaps Set up my priorities for the day… Goals ahead of time.

@anniesgoathill Remember the keys to time management: planning, organization, and action.

Q2 HOW DO YOU DETERMINE WHICH TASKS TO PRIORITIZE
WHEN THE LIST IS SO LONG?

@anniesgoathill Determine which tasks are vital to the successful operation of your business.

@INDIEbusiness For business, I generally prioritize the tasks that lead most directly to money.

@AstridaNaturals I try to tackle anything that directly leads to customer satisfactionearly in the day. Answering questions… etc.

Q3 HOW DO YOU FOLLOW A TASK TO COMPLETION, EVEN THOUGH YOU WEAR SO MANY HATS AS A#SMALLBIZ OWNER?

@anniesgoathill Once a task is scheduled, make it your appointment. Stick to it.Stay focused. Your time is valuable.

@donnarosa Break larger projects down into smaller tasks. Or pick one large project and focus only on that.

@highwireinheels I have to use self talk because the multi-task demon tries to make me start on something else.

Q4 HOW DO YOU SCHEDULE TIME FOR SOCIAL MEDIA?

@anniesgoathill Social media is an important way for your business to publish content and interact with others

@SoapCoach Every day while I check my emails or once I am done with everything else.

@INDIEbusiness I don’t think about scheduling time for “social media.” I think about scheduling time to market my biz.

@anniesgoathill Schedule your Twitter, Facebook, and other social media time in blocks. 10 mins morning, 10 mins afternoon.

@anniesgoathill If you want personal social time, limit it to lunch breaks and after working hours.

Q7 WHAT THINGS HAVE WE NOT DISCUSSED THAT YOU DO TO KEEP YOUR FOCUS AND ACCOMPLISH YOUR GOALS?

@anniesgoathill  Difficult as it might be, when you leave the office, say goodnight. Tomorrow is a new day. Enjoy life!

@bubsandscrubs Protect my health and energy levels. Need the strength to keep things moving.

When the most recent kids were born at Annie’s Goat Hill, I decided to let them camp out in the milk stand area.  Unlike our old barn, which had a separate milk/feed room with a sliding door, I now milk in a penned section of the barn.  A small panel gate separates the milk/feed area from the rest of the barn.

The paneled gate works.  The kids run in and out of the gate smoothly.  They eat their hay and grain without battling the larger goats outside, but then, much to my dislike, so does Caleb, the guard dog.   He devoured the grain intended for my milkers, all of it.  And thank you very much, he got pretty sick from it.

So, I ended up tying a piece of fencing to the gate, leaving enough room for the kids to squeeze through, but not enough room for Caleb.  The power of a farmer – baling twine, and extra pieces of fencing.  We learn to not throw anything out that can later be used to patch something up.

Newborn goat kids eventually discover that the swish-swish sound coming from the milk stand means there is warm milk.  As they become mobile (which doesn’t take long), they end up jumping on the stand, nudging the udder as I milk.  It can be rather disastrous.  So, I eventually rigged up a goat panel in the corner of the milk/feed area to put the kinds in (with hay and grain) until milking is done.  Wa-la, problem resolved.

New kittens have been born and momma cat is begging for warm milk.  She bats at me as I walk past the milk stand.  Her big green eyes seemingly stare into my soul, “You will give me milk!” The batting from momma cat recently started including claws.  Ouch! So, now, because I cannot contain a cat inside of a goat panel, I am forced into a new work-around to keep myself from injury-by-cat.  The routine involves stopping and staring her down before I proceed to the milk stand.  With deliberation, I say the words, “You will not swipe me with those needles.  You will be patient!” So far, so good.  She doesn’t look happy.  But she is registering my words, and I am no longer suffering from cat scratches.  She still gets her portion of warm milk.

Another part of the daily routine is to carry kittens to their feed dish.  Apparently, they want to eat kibble with the big-wigs, but I want to make sure they eat well, at the “kitten feeding station.”  You should see my arms lined with kittens as “we” walk to the aluminum feed pan.  Which, by the way, is now being demolished after I leave the area, by none-other than young goats.  I can just see them now, behind the closed barn door, passing the pan from kid to kid, “This is a fun and noisy object!”

Well, I am out of here for now.  Heading back down to the barn because…I forgot to untie and release the kids from their paneled corner! All of this love just to make a bar of soap.  It is worth every moment.  Trust me.
