White Tea and Ginger Goat Milk Soap

White Tea and Ginger goat milk soap.

Pretty, don’t you think?

I like this one a lot.  It is tart, grassy, with an oriental tea type of aroma.

I have started the paring down of fragrance oils (the amount of bottles we counted when we moved was amazing).  I am enjoying the fun of working with pigments and new fragrances.  Who knows, these “limited time only” soaps may have to return to our store now and then.

Soon, the first round of new soaps will be ready for the soap store.  It should be enjoyable for our customers that come in and ask, “What’s new in the shop today?” I am excited!

Floating around the cosmetic world is a lot of talk surrounding the ingredient SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate).  SLS is a surfactant, a detergent, that can be found in shampoos, toothpastes, body washes, and other personal care products.  The waves of fear regarding SLS come roaring in, carrying the messages that SLS causes cancer, hair loss, and that SLS is the most dangerous ingredient in cosmetics.  None of these safety claims have been substantiated by a proven scientific study.

I personally do not feel SLS is dangerous to our health, however, I do know that some individuals are more sensitive to the ingredient than others.  I am one of them.  My own personal fact:  the use of shampoos and toothpastes containing SLS leave me with scalp and gum irritation.  I do feel (as in the case of any cosmetic ingredient), there are some people more sensitive to SLS than others.

So, at Annie’s Goat Hill Handcrafted Soaps, we continue to work on development of products that are SLS free.

Our current project (pictured above) are shampoo bars.  Shampoo bars are definitely not a new item on our store shelves, however, our current testing is focused on usage in hard water.

We plan to release our newest version of Annie’s Shampoo Bars within the next several weeks.

No, no whining here.  No cheese needed.  Just soapmaking.

I started 2012 with a bit of loss-of-words.  Did I really say that? Yes, you bet, I did! So, I am firing off the new year with pictures.

Enjoy!

A thin white film on soap can occur for many different reasons.  Complete a Google search, you will a bucket-load of (legitimate) causes:  goat milk, ash (lye), air, fragrance PH not geared towards the soap type.

What you do not want to see in a bar of soap:  large white blotches, white crumbly patches, large seeping holes, or a dry and delicate soap that crumbles easily.  All of these things usually indicate a problem with sodium hydroxide (lye) either not mixed properly in a formula of soap, or included at too high of a percentage.  Throw the soap away! Do not use it!

A thin white film on the outer surface of soap is not harmful.   Covering a freshly poured batch of soap with plastic wrap for 24-48 hours normally prevents the white film.  There are fragrances, essential oils, and soap formulas that are more reactive to air, and despite the soap maker’s best handling procedures, a thin white film can develop on the hardened soap (even after it hits the consumer’s soap dish).

When working with natural base ingredients, soap can be tricky, especially when goat milk is a part of the formula.  Milk that is produced from a herd of goats fed on grass, hay, and grain differs in both fat and sugar content from season to season.  For this reason, many of us treasure the subtle differences in our soaps.  It simply reflects handmade-from-scratch!

We have barely scratched the surface.

A few days ago I was standing in a music store talking “shop” (small business) with the co-owner.  As she began to tell me about natural-based products that a very large company sells I told her about our soaps and lotions.  I saw the look come into her eyes.  We (my husband and I) are accustomed to seeing THE LOOK.  We decipher THE LOOK as:  “I am not sure what she is talking about.  How can soap be made from milk? And does she really make it herself? I just don’t know…”.  We then explain what we do, where our products come from, and that our products are made-from-scratch, handmade.   The look doesn’t go away.  We bring out the business cards, the samples, and nudge people to give our products a try.

You know, the surface has not even been scratched.

If you are in support of small business, local business, farmers, and if you support the continued availability of natural, and nearly natural, products to each and every consumer, then we would appreciate your goat milk soap shout-outs!

Don’t forget to tell us about it here too!

Thank you for your support…we have some awesome customers!

Mary

P.S.  If you haven’t noticed, we support quite a few small businesses, organizations, and local entities on our business Facebook page.  This is why:  now is the time to make waves, stand up for what is the backbone of America!

The holiday season has arrived!

Don’t you just love this time if year? Everything smells so good, looks so pretty, and folks in general seem to be in great spirit!

In light of the season, we discounted our Pumpkin Caramel fragranced goat milk soap in our store to $3.50 a bar.

A customer recently told me they didn’t want to use their bar of Pumpkin Caramel because it made their bathroom smell so good! With the discount, folks like her can more easily double up on their soap purchases and place a bar in all of their rooms (kitchen, bath, or even another room where they might want to enjoy the seasonal scent).

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Does a long ingredient name (one that most people cannot pronounce, or need a magnifying to read) equate to a “bad chemical” in a product? No!

Skin creams and lotions (amongst other common personal care items such as deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste…)  are considered cosmetics.

Per the FDA, cosmetic ingredients must be labeled with INCI names.  What are INCI names? The International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients is a “system of names” that include scientific, Latin and English words.

Let’s take a look at a simple ingredient: shea butter.  Good quality unrefined shea butter is about as basic as it can be.   Shea butter is collected in South Africa from the kernel of the shea tree (as described here).   The raw butter is melted, stirred and filtered.  The INCI name for shea butter is Butyrospermum Parkii.  Yes, a scary looking long name.  No, the long name on the cosmetic label does not make it a “bad” chemical.

If you find yourself concerned about an ingredient on a label, I urge you to ask the manufacturer for additional information.  A cosmetic maker should always be happy to explain their products.
