Guess what caught me by surprise? The ripening of the apples!
It is mid-September, apples should be of no surprise. We are also having cool, crisp nights with little breezes that hint at autumn. So, why not?
Our wild goose family made an appearance on the pond this morning. They had been gone for over a month. As I watched them splash and play I realized I had better pick some of the apples before there were no more pickens’ remaining! The geese love apples.
We have another apple tree above the pond that produces golden delicious apples. I never get to them before they ripen. They are ready earlier in the season, when the geese and their young are still on the pond each and every day.
I do not know the variety of the apples I picked today. They are very crisp and tart. They aren’t the prettiest apples in the world, but let me tell you, they make absolutely wonderful pies.
Are you ready for fall?
I think I’ll sit outside late this evening with a steamy cup of coffee and enjoy the quiet, the stars, and the coolness without the threat of mosquitos. I would love to stretch this perfect time of year out a few more months!
Enjoy!
Hi Mary Dear! I’m back. It’s wonderful to sit with you a while and catch up. I’ve noticed the geese moving around here quite a bit but none moving south yet. Mostly they move from lake to lake. Our apples came and went – fast – with the heat wave we had in August. My apples were coming along but lost to the heat. I’d love to have a basket of those like yours!
However, I did get pears. Made several jars of preserves before the wedding onslaught. Oooooo — gooooood! How are all the young kids doing?
I’ll need to make a soap order soon for the holidays.
It feels good to sit with you a while too, Deb. It has been a very busy summer, and the pace is continuing through fall apparently! The wedding looked wonderful! I cannot imagine how busy you were.
Sounds like pure autumn bliss to me!
I enjoyed picking the apples. I also cut branches of pines, apple and maple trees the same day for the goats. It was a treat!
I love those kind of apples!!
I don’t know what kind they are either. But they are delicious.
Save me some of those seeds! Seriously!!
One of the things about down here in the South, well in my area, there aren’t many apple trees.
You know, the old trees. The one’s we grew up eating for snacks.
I had an apple tree in my backyard where I grew up in WV. I miss that tree.
Correct me if I am wrong. I will save some apple seeds for you. I will dry them on a paper towel and then store them in a sandwhich bag once they are dried, to avoid the risk of them molding. Then I’ll mail them to you!
Great!
I give it my best shot to grow an Ohio apple tree!!!
Chickie, now you really have me smiling. You can do a pictorial of your Ohio apple tree!!!!
Yum but it’s a hot one today!
Amy
It has been unsually hot! Have a great evening, Amy!
But today it is starting to feel like Fall! Have a good day Mary.
