Ahhh…a relaxing quiet day on the farm.
Until…the dog develops one million fleas and is up crying and scratching all night.
Until…the milk machine develops an issue and causes black outs in the barn. The disco lighting effect was interesting…but not so when you need to milk goats.
Until…mother barn cat decides to no longer take care of her 2 week old kittens. My first words were, “I am not bottle feeding.” We shall see.
Until…the repairman decides to show up early, and the self-employed husband has been called to the city nearly 2 hours away.
Until…the overnight storms flatten half of the (already) small rose garden.
Until…a small mudslide means you tromp through 3″ deep mud just to get to a fresh water source for the goats and pigs.
Until…the pigs decide to turn over any water trough you enclose in the pen, amounting to the farmer wading through muck just to set things back in place.
Until…Mr. Yellow Tom decides he wants to hang out at the house, not cool for a barn cat that lives on the same property as boxer dogs. And not so cool for me, the short person that is trying to get the boxers to do their “business” while there is a strange man in her kitchen working on her dishwasher.
I’ll stop right here…it has been a truly challenging day.
I hear the echos of so many that have said to me, “I want to live your life.”
Yes, you can mark my words, I wouldn’t trade this for a return to the city. But glamorous it is not. Peaceful…only on certain days. But we’ll work on tomorrow and forget about today.
The life I chose and love. Yes.
If you tell me you are trading your city life for one in the country. I’ll still say, “Go for it!”
I have had many a day such as yours, and am glad for respite from them. However, I , like you, would not trade them for a return to the “conveniences” of a different life. Just another challenging day in the life of Mary on Annie’s Goat Hill.Blessings abundant.I hope these problems have been remedied Mary.
The challenges make us a bit stronger. It seems to get a bit crazy on some days, but we end up laughing. Its all a part of it.
I thought the idea of ending up laughing over days like the one described were because I’d finally lost what tiny bit of sanity I had! Does seem at times everyone gets a new kind of diarrhea, sore, cat gets a torn ear and Hubby is off doing something “else” when it all peaks. BUT – persevere – one job at a time (well really two or three but we women aren’t supposed to brag!) and life settles back to smoother sailing.
Yes – country life has huge rewards – but it is not easy or cheap!
I chuckled at “it is not easy or cheap.”
I am now bottle feeding the kittens. And I have them in the house in a box, in a warmer part of the house. There isn’t a cool enough building, close enough, where I can keep a close eye on them and feed them every 3 or 4 hours. You should see my arms and legs. The kittens do not understand I am doing something good for them.
I said I wasn’t going to do it, but there goes the big heart for animals.
Thanks, Linda Sue, for the country life “chit chat.”
Been there, done that! I love living in the country but it does have challenges from day to day though and yesterday evening at supper time wasn’t very peaceful and quiet with hail pounding against our windows and metal roof and skylights in our kitchen along with heavy rain!

We have had quite a number of storms lately, especially with hail. We did not run across anywhile while we were on the road, but the weather reporter tonight said many areas had 50 MPH winds today.
I agree, go for it! Sometimes life is hectic no matter where you live.
I waited a long time to begin to live my dream. I wouldn’t try to pursuade anyone to not do it. I agree, Stacey.
Hey do you have any soap that keeps ticks off?
No, I don’t. I wish I did. I carried a soap for pets once, it did have citronella in it, which is said to be a natural flea and tick repellent. I thought it was drying so I discontinued the product.
I lived most of my life in a rural area9but not in the country) with frequent visits to my Grandmother’s farm. I loved it there.
Most of my adult life has been in the country with a little city living thrown in.
For me, the city is for visiting. I love my country life.
Visits to the country was always something I looked forward to. I even made shopping trips longer by driving the long way.
I am glad you love your country life too, Becky.
