Today I enjoyed my time in the soap shop. I always do savor my time there, but today I was inspired a bit more than normal.
I have been studying natural perfume and soon will be ramping up the testing.
Today I organized the essential oils that I have on hand. I organized by type (base, middle, and top note).
I will be receiving several shipments of new oils this week and am excited to test new recipes.
Of course, I want more oils. I will likely never be satisfied. As soon as I think I have the oils on hand that I will want/need I discover a new one that intrigues me. However, time, patience, and small (layered) steps are best.
Aroma has been a part of me since I was a small child. Perhaps it began during the years we lived in France when I was a young child. I do not know.
Soap was a passion that started at 7 years old.
I am excited to bring the perfume forward for several reasons. First, I find so many perfumes on the market to be obtrusive to the senses. They are overwhelming.
I believe perfume should be a personal thing. You and just perhaps a person close to you should be able to smell the aroma. I do not think perfume should permeate a room.
Perfume should not cause horrible allergic reactions for those that are near you.
That is why I am focusing only on natural perfumes.
More to come on this topic soon. I am enthused, and hoping to share more with everyone soon.
Mary, I agree with your assessment of perfume and scent and it will be interesting to read about what you come up with. I know exactly what you’re talking about when you say you get excited about ordering more oils, etc, Always exploring and excited about your soaps and the soap-making process shows your passion !
BTW, how has your rose scented soap coming? I am in need of ordering more from you and can’t wait!
Kathy, an email is on the way regarding the soap.
I am becoming more and more sensitive to chemical perfumes. I know others are too.

I could not agree more! I was in the vet’s office the other day picking up some supplies when a lady came in with “knock you over” perfume and I could not help but start coughing even from 15 feet away. That is NOT the reaction one wants other people to have to their perfume!
I used to work with a woman that wore beautiful scents. But one in particular instantly made me sick to my stomach. I really didn’t hate the aroma, it simply bothered me physically. Not a good thing, is it?
I agree with you, not the reaction a person would want!
Best of luck with the perfumes, Mary. I’m sure you’ll come up with some winners just like you do your soaps!
I agree with your statement about a perfume not knocking you over. It should be subtle. Can’t wait to see what you come up with! You must have a very special nose!
I hope my nose does right for me Vickie.
I am now detecting the different notes within on essential oil. I noticed it before, but not like I am now. I think it takes years to develop that type of nose, and then it is still a thing that will continue to progress.
Hi, I found you via Debbie’s blog “Wisdom” and I’m glad I did. I’ve just now placed a soap order. Can’t wait to see what develops with your perfumes. I agree that your scent should be very personal; I like to think of my fragrance as my signature; alluring but not overwhelming.
Hello Nola, what a beautiful name.
I am excited about the perfumes. It will still be a while before they are ready. I want them to age at least 4 weeks to allow the essential oils to marry and blend.
Thank you for the order!
I agree!
I hate it when someone walks past me and their perfume almost knocks me over. Especially if it’s an offensive scent.
But then…there are those times when something smells so good. One of the young kids that made a delivery here this week had something on that I could barely smell. It was not offensive. My thoughts were, “I wish I could re-create that!”
