I apologize for the poor quality of the pic. My phone was the only camera available at the moment. And goat kids most certainly do not stay still long, hence the clothes basket!
This little tyke is nic-named The Caped Crusader. He was born from a set of triplets. At birth he weighed in at just barely 2 pounds. A newborn boer goat buckling (young male goat) normally enters the world between 7 and 9 pounds.
The Caped Crusader’s life was touch and go for a day or so. I am able to say he is now happy and gaining activity as each day passes.
He won the Annie’s Goat Hill honors of wearing a goat coat.
I cut goat coats from sleeves of women’s sweatshirts. The wrist bands are perfect for a small goat’s neck. The coat is slit down the middle, and slits are cut from the sides to make “arm holes.” They are great for the tiniest of kids that chill easily.
If you do make a goat (or lamb) coat, make sure the animal can breathe well, and that they cannot snag themselves in anything dangerous by the fabric. If the neck is too taught, stretch it with your hands before you put it on the kid.
The coats are washable. They do not fray around the edges. Wash and dry. Simple.
I would imagine these coats would also work well for a small dog. Or a larger one if you used a man-sized sweatshirt.
Do you like it?
Our Cape Crusader does!
We use clothes baskets too, you should have seen our kitchen, 3-4 years ago lined up with those metal dog crates and with towels all over the floor and a laundry basket as well! We cut sleeves off old kids sweatshirts and we pick some up at Good Will and thrift stores as well and my Mom made some out of polar fleece and water proof material too. He is cute though! Yep, we throw them in our washer and dryer too along with all the birthing cloths but we have a separate washer and dryer for that kind of stuff though.
Amy
ah – necessity is the Mother of invention indeed. I received an adorable fleece goat coat from a friend in Ohio – although we haven’t needed to worry about chilled babies this winter (goats had perfect timing between storms) it is a great idea and if you look at the cost of dog clothes in a petstore – that is a 18 dollar outfit!
An 18.00 outfit. Ha! Who would have known? LOL!
It is haute couture in the goat world. Mary, I can see another line in your future! HAHA!
Debbie
Well, Debbie, that would be over the line. I definitely would need help at that point. Perhaps…just perhaps…ha ha ha!
The Caped Crusader!! I love it!!!
What a great idea. You are so thrifty AND creative!
Creation from necessity.
Our special needs kids normally do get funny nic-names. This one is a hoot.
I love reading about your goats. It’s another world for me. Keep us posted about your Crusader. I just laughed when I saw him.
I didn’t tell how funny he is. He takes tiny steps, and loves to back up instead of go forwards. At 10 days old they are normally doing acrobats. He is more like a mini poodle or small dog. Active, happy, seems healthy, yet different. Cute. And yes, very funny!
Mary, this is the cutest thing I’ve seen in a long, long time! I laughed, too, when I saw your Crusader! I wonder if my chihuahua would wear one of those coats…hm… she shivers all the time. Think I might try it!!!
Congrats on focusing and getting some things done!!!
I removed the “cape” from the little one yesterday. He is now nearing 5 pounds, beginning to bounce around. He is 12 days old. It is time. He is beginning to act like a normal kid goat. Happy to see it. And now that his jacket is off, and the temperatures are going up there, he’ll stay warm. Funny, though, huh? I still call him the Caped Crusader.
He will always be your Caped Crusader!!
The little guy is still growing, slowly, but developing quite the attititude. Even the newest of newborns are larger than he is. Healthy. If there ever seemed to be a miniature goat, it would be him.
That is a very clever and simple idea! I love it.
And the little guy is so cute.
Thank you.
Simple, washes and wears well.
The little guy is growing. He is still very small but is normal in all other respects.
Have a great day!
