With an oink, oink here…and an oink, oink there…Old MacDonald had a farm…E…I…E…I…O!
My husband took me out to the pig farm today. I selected two female piglets. The male piglet is coming from another farm. It is not good to breed brothers and sisters in the pig world.
Pigs are affectionate?! Pigs are smart. I saw it, or else I would have never believed it.
Mr. Red, the duroc sire, is a big boar. When the wife called him out of the barn, Mr. Red stuck only his nose and ears out. But that was enough for my first glimpse. To self I said, “I thought pigs were smaller than that! That boy is huge!” Once the wife started to pet some of the other pigs, Mr. Red emerged. He wanted attention too.
Ms. Raindrops, the hampshire mother, is a large off-white haired sow. She, like the sire, loves attention.
The piglets are 6-8 weeks old. They have recently been weaned. I will pick them up in about a week.
Now…and my friends, you need to help me here…I am NOT going to keep any of the piglets that are born in the future. They are going to be sold. I am not going into a full-scale pig business. If I keep one, it will go to the freezer.
I promise!
yeah right, you’ll be raising ’em in the house with ya
Well…..if YOU say so…..
Aren’t they cute? People I know who keep pigs do tend to fall in love with them, they ARE smart and mostly friendly. I have seen a sow rear up trying to defend a piglet ( who was NOT in danger, just squealed in surprise ) and that sow was a mighty force of anger. She scared a whole barn full of people .
I am expecting lots of cute posts about the antics of the pigs!
Amazing. Most people just see pigs as…well, pigs. I know I never thought of them in any kind of positive nature especially a nurturing one.
A new adventure… have fun, Mary!!! I thought I would like to raise one for the freezer, so you’ll have to let me know how it goes. 🙂
Can’t wait to see pictures of the new farm additions.
No WAY! You did not just add the cutest most adorable things on earth to your farm menagerie. Pictures immediately please!
Good luck with that.
If they are at all friendly, and you are anything like me, you will be making pets out of them.
I get attached to animals if I have anything at all to do with them.
Give them names, put cute little hats on them and take pictures…..
Like I said, good luck. You’ll have to have a stronger will than I have when it comes to critters.
Cuteness! We had pigs when I was little… mmm ours got out ALL the time LOL … the babies anyway… I remember chasing them down as a kid :O)… to cute to cute …
Sounds like a great new project! I can’ t wait to see pictures of them and hear more about your new additions.
Congrats on the pigs!
